Hi everyone,
This is the first blog, hopefully of many. I have so many ideas that I want to get out there and loads of information that anyone who sings or is learning to sing should know! Here's the start, please join my journey and feel free to ask questions or request a blog on something that you really want to know about.
My aim is to provide free information and advice about caring for your voice; whether you're a singer, public speaker, or just somebody who wants to improve their voice for speaking up in meetings. My main concern is that over the years I've spent looking at the voice and learning from various people, there still seems to be a black hole of knowledge about how the voice works and how to teach people to use it well.
It seems a shame that there is no real monitoring system for singing teachers i.e. anyone can call themselves a singing teacher and start teaching; this leads to people who don't really know what they're talking about teaching other people who are paying them for information and guidance.
There is also no culture for ongoing development. Anyone who obtained a degree 30 or 40 years ago in any music related subject can teach the same way for 40 years without having to update their knowledge. In my opinion that can leave you a bit stale. You wouldn't want a doctor who hadn't looked at any developments over the last 40 years to carry out surgery on you, so why put your voice, which is such a large part of your identity in the hands of someone who isn't developing themselves? We all feel lousy when we lose our voices through temporary illness, but we're never taught to look after them properly from an early age. Please don't take your voice for granted anymore.
Students keep you on your toes; learning how to get a good message across and finding the quickest ways to get the best results for them, I can't help but think that not every teacher does the same. At least that has been my experience and the experience of many of my students.
I hope to always keep my knowledge fresh. To be a perpetual student all of my life; looking for the best ways to help people understand that if you want your voice to always work for you in any situation and especially if you love to sing, that vocal health and knowing what to do when you're not feeling your best should be pretty high on your priority list.
Well that's all for now. More info soon!
Happy singing
